Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular sci-fi show wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions about Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? In short yes… with some caveats.
“There are some interesting ideas about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
