UK Administration Cancels Substantial Funding for Mozambique Gas Project Amid Environmental and Terrorism Concerns
The British government has pulled a controversial $1.15 billion loan backing a massive LNG scheme in the African nation of Mozambique, after growing allegations that the venture fuels the global warming and insurgent unrest in the province.
Government Decision and Reasoning
Business Secretary Peter Kyle announced that the UK would withdraw its backing for the Mozambique LNG project, marking five years after the agreement ignited fierce backlash from campaigners over its impact on human rights, security, and the environment.
âWhile these choices are never simple, the government holds the view that UK support of this scheme will not further the interests of our country,â said Kyle.
The decision emerged as the scheme's developer, France-based energy giant TotalEnergies, is set to restart the troubled operation, which has been suspended since a deadly militant attack on a nearby community in 2021 caused over 800 of deaths.
History and Escalating Concerns
The financing deal was originally sanctioned in 2020. The government explained they had assessed the risks associated with the venture and found they had increased significantly since that time.
At first, the UK's export credit agency had said the project would support thousands of UK employment opportunities and could be âgame-changing for Mozambique's financial and social development.â
However, environmental organisations have consistently contended that the African nation should be supported to invest more heavily in sustainable sources to build a sustainable low-carbon future.
Opposition and Appeals for Broader Action
The initiative became a lightning rod for insurgency in the area and was also accused of violating the human rights of residents who were moved when development activities started.
âIt has been evident for years that this project is a failure for local communities and for the environment,â said one campaigner from a ethical investment group. The campaigner pressed leading international banks supporting the venture to withdraw their support, stating they âcan no longer overlook the problems.â
Another leading climate campaigner added: âThis LNG scheme is a huge climate liability, tied to significant violations. It should never have been given UK public support in the first place.â
They further advocated that the UK should instead support nations like Mozambique by aiding them to become resilient to the effects of the climate crisis and invest in their rich renewable resources.
