When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the hardest approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He resides by himself in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to control his aggression, having been shown red at the start of his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” he said.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – that's the reality. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
