SNAP Payments Scheduled to Expire for Tens of Millions During Prolonged Federal Shutdown

USDA officials declared recently that monthly food benefits under one of the country’s largest welfare initiatives won't be issued next month due to the ongoing government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists Into 25th Day

The funding lapse had reached nearly a month as officials revealed the news, coming after appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives asking the department to tap into reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.

“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” officials announced. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” on 1 November.

Millions Affected

Tens of millions of people count on these monthly payments, per federal data. Various areas, such as New Mexico, dependence on this assistance is as high as a significant portion of citizens.

Internal communications seen by a major news agency indicated that USDA officials would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Political Stalemate

Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked regarding how to support and resume federal agencies.

Comments by the head of a budget research center indicated that federal leadership had opportunities to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“Officials were able and expected to taken steps weeks ago to be prepared to use these funds,” the statement continued. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them for potential political benefit” as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a spending bill that would resume the federal government.

States Prepare

State leaders from multiple regions declared states of emergency recently to make money available to address food insecurity expecting food benefits expiring during the upcoming period.
