Move Over, Murdoch: Is Lord Rothermere Set to Become Britain's Leading Media Mogul?
Biding two decades for a fresh opportunity to snaffle a coveted business acquisition is a privilege not available to most business leaders. The Rothermere family, though, takes a more relaxed stance to timing.
Whereas most business boards draw up five-year plans, the Rothermeres, having compiled a feared media empire over over one hundred years, are accustomed to planning in terms of generations.
A Long-Awaited Bid
This was in the summer of 2004 that Jonathan Harold Esmond Vere Harmsworth, the distinguished proprietor of the Daily Mail, was unsuccessful in his attempt to acquire the Telegraph titles.
In his view, the setback pleased Rupert Murdoch because it would have created a portfolio of conservative newspapers powerful enough to challenge the “distinct political influence” of his publications.
The reserved Rothermere, however, was able to play a longer game. The publications were again put up for sale in 2023. Since then, two prospective owners have come and gone, both after internal Telegraph revolts over their suitability. Rothermere has now swooped.
Dynastic Heritage
As a result, the fifty-seven-year-old has reinforced his family’s obsession with UK press, after his forebears acquired, disposed of, and merged some of the biggest titles of their day.
“Lord Rothermere has got a business head, but he’s not sharply business minded,” stated a media analyst. “This sounds a bit cheesy, but he’s genuinely passionate about journalism. I suspect internally, they’ve wanted to unite media businesses that serve centre-right audiences for decades.”
Significant challenges remain before the nobleman’s DMGT group can secure the publications. In addition to competition and media plurality concerns, staff members are asking how he will stump up the £500m valuation. However, Rothermere’s hopes of creating a right-leaning media giant have been rekindled.
Out of the Limelight
This constituted a bold bid for a proprietor who prides himself on staying behind the scenes, often noting his readiness to let the pugnacious views of the Daily Mail differ from his own moderate, Europhile stance.
With the Rothermeres, though, media acquisitions are a family affair. An image of the founder, his ancestor who founded the Daily Mail in 1896, adorns Rothermere’s office. A childhood recollection was of his father, Vere, taking him to the hot-metal newspaper presses.
Press Background
In his youth would be included in conversations about the challenging launch for the Mail on Sunday in 1982. He remembers the pressure of the intense competition in 1987 between the London Daily News and his family’s London paper, which he later sold.
He personally flirted with journalism, serving as a subeditor and reporter on the Sunday Mail in Scotland, before focusing on the commercial operations of his dynastic empire. When his father died in 1998, Rothermere is said to have had about 20 minutes upon returning home from the hospital before business communications began, in effect starting his leadership of DMGT, at thirty years old.
Business Direction
He has previously sold off profitable parts of the business to refocus on the Mail and additional press holdings. This latest offer is the most recent indication of his keenness to consolidate the family’s media stronghold. “This is a 20-year plus target acquisition,” said a ex-staffer. “He doesn’t want the Mail as the only newspaper asset he leaves for his son Vere.”
His choice to delist the company in 2021 has also facilitated the acquisition attempt. “I don’t have to justify myself to anybody,” he said soon after the move.
Press Freedom
Attempting to alter the Telegraph’s editorial line would be uncharacteristic. An ex-editor informed that neither Rothermere nor his father meddled in content.
“That is the main reason why I turned down very enticing offers to edit the Times and the Telegraph,” he stated. “Frankly, I simply didn’t believe that other proprietors would give me that freedom. It’s difficult to overstate how valuable that freedom is to an editor.”
He continued, “Fleet Street is littered with the corpses of sacked editors who, amid crashing circulations, tried to please their proprietors rather than their readers. The Rothermeres have always understood that. It’s a sacred principle for them that editors are given total editorial autonomy, with the brutally clear understanding that they are dismissed if they produce poor papers.”
Political Concerns
With British politics seemingly sliding to the right, there are inevitable political concerns about uniting the Mail and Telegraph at a juncture when each have been boosting coverage of a right-wing political movement.
Several progressive figures believe the Mail’s combative tone has become even starker in recent years, citing its championing of talking points advocated by the political leader on migration and the “woke” agenda. Some believe the Telegraph has experienced an even more radical shift, often running radical-right opinion pieces that exceed those of the Mail.
Funding Uncertainties
Many queries remain about how an individual possessing Rothermere’s resources has the funds. Most media analysts estimate that a more realistic price tag for the publications is in the range of £350m, but Rothermere is willing to pay a higher price.
The company lacks a available £500m, the sum reportedly demanded by the current holders as they seek to recoup the debt that gained it control of the titles two years ago.
Future Prospects
Rothermere has promised to maintain the Telegraph and Mail titles editorially separate, regarding them as serving distinct readerships – broadsheet and mid-market. Nonetheless, there are apprehensions within both publications over cuts and the longer-term plans, considering the condition of the press sector.
Again, the family has demonstrated a readiness to take drastic action when necessary. When Rothermere’s father was attempting to save an ailing Daily Mail in 1971, he combined it with the Daily Sketch, dismissing numerous staff in the process.
Approval Process
A government minister has asked that DMGT and the current owners submit the intended acquisition to the government within 21 days, but the outstanding issues will ensure the process continues well into the coming year.
“A company that owns the Mail and the Telegraph would have the scale to give both papers a better chance of surviving,” noted an industry veteran. “But, even then, such a company would be a pygmy compared to the giant internet platforms and the BBC from whom most people today get their news.”
His eldest son, thirty-one, Rothermere’s eldest son, is already being prepared to assume leadership of the family empire, occupying a key position in DMGT’s media business. Whether his duties will include oversight of the Telegraph is the subsequent phase in the family's press narrative.
