Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister stated on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks said that an late session of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The representative explained the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to narrow the disparities between the conflicting groups.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid provision
  • After-conflict management of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence heal," she continued.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Protester one woman explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we really want promises that we will be safe."

Research now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to finish in return for the release of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the location of the music event, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were documented in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"Once the evening falls, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported two more dead people had been transported. A person was killed by Israeli forces while looking for assistance to the south, medical staff reported.

The territory's health ministry said twenty-five of the {territ
