Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as ā€œvivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help peopleā€.

ā€œHow can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?ā€ a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. ā€œHe shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,ā€ she recalled.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced immense hardship in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

ā€œThis low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,ā€ the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the incident as an ā€œabsolute bloodbath,ā€ but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a ā€œstroke of luckā€ he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard ā€œdozens and dozensā€ of shots.

ā€œI thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,ā€ he explained. ā€œI sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.ā€
