Following a festive period filled with rich foods and relaxation, numerous individuals head into the new year looking to get their fitness back on track.

However, could AI be changing the world of exercise by offering an alternative to personal trainers?

Personalized Plans and Flexible Schedules

One fitness enthusiast used an AI tool for impromptu training for the a major running event.

The 21-year-old hailing from Aberdare explained she liked the freedom to pose queries at all hours – something she felt was not possible with a personal trainer.

Leah relied on an AI-driven running app that gave her personalised plans with audio coaching and speed targets for her first long-distance race in 2024.

She explained she requested it to create a regimen combining cardio and the weight training, and it produced an 11-week programme tailored to her event day and goals.

The user then adjusted the schedule to suit her daily routine, which she described was highly practical.

Subsequently, she opted for a alternative application because it was more affordable and she could ask it questions whenever she wanted. Her result was a full minute quicker than her target finish.

She noted she did not want the pressure from a human personal trainer.

"Using AI you have to find your own drive, which I quite like," she remarked.

Remarkable Strength Improvements

Meanwhile, Richard Gallimore, 23, from Swansea, has been employing AI for his exercise and nutrition programs, and reported he has never felt stronger, boosting his bench press from 70kg to a much heavier load.

Richard turned to a AI assistant for assistance after being forced to walk a running event.

"I just knew I need to get myself in shape," he said.

This no-cost application built a workout and diet plan personalized to his goals, and established organized workouts.

"I work out for about 120 minutes a day and I've seen a real difference," he added.

The Expense Contrast: Technology vs. Traditional Training

One recent survey in late 2024 analyzed costs for 17 of the largest gym brands and found the typical monthly fee was approximately forty pounds per month, based on basic memberships.

Fees started at £23 at the cheapest chain to a premium rate at the most expensive.

Based on further data, fitness coaches determine their own fees, usually a range of thirty to sixty-five pounds per 45-60 minute appointment outside London and about a similar range in London.

Clients typically hire a trainer once or twice a week and collaborate for a short period, however these arrangements are completely flexible.

Fitness expert Dafydd Judd believes artificial intelligence will never replace the human connection that comes from in-person training.

The Essential Human Element

Personal trainer Dafydd Judd, from Cardiff, said AI can be useful to speed up progress, but believes it will not supplant the human connection and responsibility that in-person coaching offers.

The 37-year-old, who has 12 years experience as a coach, focuses on senior clients and injury rehabilitation. He mentioned a number of his trainees also employ AI.

"In my opinion it's very valuable, additional information is positive," he said.
"I think the more that people are connected digitally the more they'll desire human connection because they crave the empathy from the understanding that is absent from a computer," he added.

Dafydd said Artificial intelligence can educate users and make guidance more efficient.

But, he argued true dedication comes when people appear physically for their sessions.

"No matter how helpful as it is at 2am, a digital tool won't keep you accountable at early morning before work," Dafydd added.

In the view of many, he suggested, the fitness center is a place to disconnect from devices and stop being glued to screens.
