The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he claims was an “unintentional” offensive hand signal directed at fans during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Previous cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
